I saw this on Craig's list:

The City of Boston Transportation Department admitted to me they take
anything (bikes, scooters, motorcycles, etc) off parking meters, signs,
etc. No law or ordinance, just their unannounced policy. I lost 4 bikes
in Back Bay until I called up and found out. You cannot get them back.
It seems the rusty ones and ones with bent wheels get left alone.
