MassBike September Update

MassBike Festival THIS Sat., Aug. 27 in Concord—Pre-Registration Ends Friday
Noon

The 3rd Annual MassBike Festival is the place to be this Saturday. The
forecast is perfect: sunny and in the 70s and 80s. You’ll save time by
pre-registering, so please sign up now. Pre-registration closes Friday at
noon. Rides include a challenging metric century; our famous ice cream ride;
a trip to a cool lake; and the new pie race, sponsored by NEBC/Cycle Loft,
which features three slices of pie en route. Sponsored by Seven Cycles,

Federal Transportation Bill Wins Funding for Local Bike Path Projects

MassBike worked with our Congressional delegation to support key bicycling
projects, such as Safe Routes to School, and our legislators came through in
the recently-passed federal transportation bill. Additionally, a good number
of local bike path projects also received funding through special “earmarks”
the delegation secured. Interested in seeing if your local bike path project

Kick Your Riding Up a Notch: Sign Up for our Bicycling Skills Classes

Would you like to take your bicycling to the next level? Whether you’re a
beginning, intermediate, or advanced rider, MassBike has a course for you.
Bicycling 101 will be taught this Sunday, Aug. 28 in Easthampton; on Sunday,
Sept. 11 in Somerville; and on Saturday, Oct. 15 in Arlington. Please sign

The regular cost of the course is $50, and there is a special $40 discounted
rate for MassBike members, and other partner groups (see website for

Take the MetroBoston Area Bicycle Survey

The Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) is the regional planning
agency for 101 cities and towns in the Boston metropolitan region, and they
are updating their bicycle and pedestrian plan. MAPC has developed a survey
to learn more about regional opinions and activities in the region related
to bicycling. Your responses will be reflected in the new Regional Bicycle
Plan due out this Fall. Please take five minutes to complete the
survey—bicyclist or not—and see how your views compare with those of others
in the region.

Workshop for Bike Path Advocates: September 14

The Rails-to-Trails Conservancy is hosting a special workshop series for
rail-trail advocates. The first of three workshops will be held on
Wednesday, Sept. 14 and is entitled “Friends of the Trail: Why and How to
Create a Solid Advocacy Organization.” Participants will learn about
creating a non-profit organization, the roles that they play, how to grow
and organization and how to keep people involved.  Attendees will break out
into groups to discuss some of the challenges that each faces with their own
organizations. The cost is $10/person and the registration deadline is
September 7.

Speak Up for Bicycling Issues Across the State

MassBike has met with state transportation officials to push for more
recognition of bicycling issues in the state’s 20 Year Draft Transportation
Plan, but the best way to ensure our voices are heard is to keep the message
coming. Here’s your chance to stand up for bicycling in your local area.
Executive Office of Transportation staff will be holding public meetings
across the state to discuss the 20 Year Plan; please attend and speak about
the importance of bike projects and good roadways for bicycling in your
area. Here are the meetings:

Hub on Wheels Festival Needs Volunteers

The Hub on Wheels Festival, taking place in Boston on Sunday, September 25,
needs volunteers—both for that day and in the days and weeks beforehand. If
you’d like to help with activities such as set-up or clean-up, marking rides
beforehand, registration, etc., please get involved. This event is a
MassBike partner and is donating $1/rider to MassBike to support bicycle
advocacy.
