MassBike Wins Bike/Ped Liasions at MassHighway

Is there a dangerous pothole you ride by on a state road? A bicycle detector
at a traffic light that doesn’t work? A rumble strip that’s hazardous to
bicyclists? MassBike has been working with MassHighway to set up a procedure
for reporting and correcting these hazards. MassHighway has just appointed
bicycle/pedestrian liaisons at all their district offices, thanks to the
efforts of Commissioner Luisa Paiewonsky. If there is a situation on a state
road that concerns you, please contact the appropriate liaison for your
district to report it. The liaisons are:

District 1: Thomas Galvagni, (413)-637-5700

District 2: Meryl Mandell, 413-584-1611 ext. 251

District 3: Cordis Thompson, (508) 754-7204

District 4: Jeff Cullen, (781) 641-8300

District 5: Pam Haznar, (508) 824-6633

Ciclismo Classico’s 9th Annual Singing Jingle Ride—Sunday, Dec. 11

Join Santa, Rudolph, the Ciclismo Classico Reindeer Riders and dozens of
colorfully costumed cyclists as we ride slowly (and singing loudly) through
the streets of Arlington, Somerville, Cambridge and Boston (20 miles total)
on Sunday, December 11. Candy canes and coloring book for the kids and lots
of prizes awarded to the best costumes! A shorter 6 mile family ride will go
to Harvard Square and back to Arlington Center. This year, the Jingle Ride
will benefit Cycle Kids, an independent nonprofit organization designed to
introduce children to the joys of cycling. Meet at 11:00 a.m. at Carberry’s
Bakery, 600 Mass Ave., Arlington. The family ride will go to Harvard Square
and be back by 12:30. The longer ride will proceed to Quincy Market (for
lunch and the grand finale) and be back to Arlington by approximately 3 p.m.
Suggested donation is $20 per rider. Make checks payable to CYCLE Kids, Inc.
To register, call Ciclismo Classico at 800-866-7314 or email
jewel at ciclismoclassico.com.

Bike Night Success! Nearly 200 attendees, $20,000 raised

Thanks to everyone who attended Bike Night. This year’s event was the most
successful ever, drawing 200 MassBikers and raising just under $20,000. The
event featured guest speaker Luisa Paiewonsky, MassHighway Commissioner, and
presentations of generous donations from the Charles River Wheelmen and the
Hub on Wheels Festival. We awarded our annual Influence Pedaler awards to
MBTA General Manager Dan Grabauskas, and Mark Vautour and John D’Ambruoso of
Landry’s Bicycles, who have spearheaded a Landry’s effort resulting in the
sale of more than 160 MassBike memberships this year.

We’d like to thank all of our host committee members and those who gave to
our Bike Night Pledge Drive, in which the law firm Jason and Fischer
generously matched all gifts up to $1500. Thanks also to our other business
sponsors, including Landry's Bicycles; Redbones BBQ; Quad Cycles; Seth
Yurdin, Esq; Belmont/Ace Wheelworks; and Continental Resources.

Finally, a hearty thank you to the donors to our special silent auction.

Businesses: Buy MassBike Memberships for Your Employees or Clients

At year-end, many companies buy gifts for their employees or their best
clients. Ciclismo Classico, the Arlington-based bicycle travel adventure
company, has purchased 10 MassBike memberships and has issued a challenge to
support bicycling advocacy—for every business that buys 10 MassBike
memberships, they will purchase two additional memberships.

This is your chance to wow your bike-minded employees or clients and help
support bike advocacy, at only $30 per membership. A MassBike gift
membership includes an attractive MassBike water bottle, a certificate
explaining your gift, plus benefits including 10% discounts at bike shops
and B&Bs across the state. Best of all, new members will know that for an
entire year, your gift is helping to improve their riding across
Massachusetts.

Donate Stock to MassBike

Planning your end-of-the-year tax strategy? A great way to help a cause you
care about—and get a good write-off—is to donate stock. MassBike now has a
brokerage account and can accept donations of stock. For more information
about this special way to help promote better bicycling in Massachusetts,
call Dorie at 617-542-2453 or email bikexec at massbike.org.

Voting for New Board Members

MassBike members: your year-end ballots, which request that you cast a vote
for new members of our Board of Directors, are in the mail. To come into
line with current non-profit governance best practices, the Board would also
like to merge our Bylaws and Constitution and asks you to vote on that, as
well. Please check your mailbox for details! Your response is requested by
December 22nd. Also, if you have a MassBike family membership, you have been
sent one ballot (to save paper), but we ask that your family simply mark the
ballot twice and we will register your votes.
