I just posted a simlilar question at:
http://www.livejournal.com/community/bostoncycling/33128.html

icebike.com is a good resource--I find the photograph of the cyclists at the
south pole especially inpiring.

I've heard opposing viewpoints about tires: skinny racing tires supposedly
cut through deep snow to the road below, for example.

What's worse than the actual crud on the road, in my opinion, is the fact
that the road itself becomes more narrow, with the cars parked further out
into the driving lane. Add that to the perpetual darkness and the fact that
motorists don't drive any differently (any more carefully) in the winter or
the darkness, and it gets pretty scary out there. I'm in my hi-vis jacket,
festooned with lights, taking my lane, and I still feel pretty scared. I
ride a lot less in winter for this reason--but in the safety of Critical
Mass, it's much better. I can't make it to the December ride (working
alone, can't leave early) but I should be there in January, with about 10
others.
