                  So Fine a Prospect: Walking Tour May 15


                  Join Ed Gordon, President of the Victorian Society in
America, New England Chapter, on an architectural walking tour of historic
Prospect Hill and Union Square on Sunday, May 15th, 2005. Ed will focus on
some of the Victorian ornamentation found on many structures throughout the
neighborhood, including spectacular stained glass windows, fine turned-wood
details, gingerbread porches, and gardens in full spring bloom. The tour
will begin at 3 pm in front of the Somerville Central Library at 79 Highland
Ave. and will meander through the eclectic streets of Somerville, passing by
grand mansions and charming cottages, and culminating at the City's first
police station on Bow Street. Participants will be treated at the conclusion
to light refreshments and an exclusive preview of the 14 residential
condominiums being imaginatively created in this striking National Register

                  Somerville Avenue Reconstruction Breakfast held


                  Somerville business leaders gathered in Union Square on
April 22 to discuss the anticipated reconstruction of Somerville Avenue. Co-
sponsored by Union Square Main Streets and Somerville Chamber of Commerce,
the group discussed general parameters of the project that slated to begin
next year. With work extending from Porter to Union Square these leaders
discussed ways to limit negative impacts on neighborhood businesses and how
city, contractors and utilities can best communicate construction details
and detours. A follow-up meeting will be scheduled with City of Somerville
planners to address specific aspects of the project. Contact Mimi Graney at

                  Flower Planting & Cleaning for Spring


                  April 30, as part of the city-wide clean effort sponsored
by the City of Somerville, teams of volunteers swept, raked and planted
throughout the Square. Twenty-five volunteers, mostly from Shaw's
Supermarkets, focused on the central business district and plaza, while
other teams addressed Lincoln Park and Prospect Hill. It's not too late for
businesses who wish to replant the barrel in front of their store to contact
Ricky's Flower Market. Visit his shop or call 617-628-7569 and for $29 he'll
bring colorful pansies or other plants to spruce up our sidewalks.

                  Become a Member of Union Square Main Streets

                   Union Square Main Streets, a non-profit organization, is
a partnership of local businesses, residents and the City of Somerville to
enhance the Union Square business district through active community
collaboration. Become involved in making Union Square a more vibrant
neighborhood.
                        Join us for an upcoming event, participate in one of
our committees and become a member. Memberships are $50 for Union Square
businesses and $25 for residents and general supporters.




           Union Square Market to Open June 11

                  Saturday mornings from 9 am to 1 pm you'll find the
freshest produce from Massachusetts farms right here in Union Square. Every
week from June 11 through October 15 Union Market vendors will provide a
selection of the week's crops from vine ripe heirloom tomatoes and sweet
corn to Asian greens and cut flowers. The Union Square Market is a
collaboration of Union Square Mains Streets, the City of Somerville and the
Massachusetts Federation of Farmers Markets. On alternating Saturdays our
farmers will be joined by local artists selling their crafts. The Crafts
Market is part of ArtsUnion, an initiative of the Somerville Arts Council
funded by the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
