Speak Out about MBTA Bike Access

The MBTA Bikes on the T Committee will have its annual evening meeting on
Wednesday, September 28. MassBike’s MetroBoston chapter is hosting the
committee, and the public is invited to attend and speak. Please come and
share your experiences. This is a great opportunity to speak out about
important priorities like more bike racks at MBTA stations, rail-trail
conversions, and bike racks on buses. The meeting will take place at 6:30
p.m. in Room 2150 of the Transportation Building (10 Park Plaza, Boston).

Come to the Hub On Wheels Festival—Sunday, Sept. 25



The first annual Hub On Wheels bike ride and festival, organized by Mayor
Thomas M. Menino and the City of Boston, will kick off from Franklin Park
early on September 25.  The proceeds from the event will be used to enhance
the technology programs within the Boston schools and neighborhoods, and Hub
On Wheels is also donating $1/rider to MassBike to support local bicycling
advocacy. MassBike has negotiated a special deal for our members: a 40%
discount off the regular registration rate of $35. Simply enter the code
“mabk” (case sensitive) at the appropriate point in the registration
process. You can choose between loops of 15, 25 or 40 miles through Boston's
most scenic, but often overlooked, parks and neighborhoods.  It is a chance
to see the city from a new perspective. Not able to join the ride? Come to
the free festival in Franklin Park afterward, or volunteer with a variety of
tasks.

Final Harpoon Social of 2005: Thursday, Oct. 6



Please join us for the final MassBike Harpoon Brewery social of 2005! We’ll
be meeting up on Thursday, October 6 from 5:30—7:30 p.m. at Harpoon’s HQ,
306 North Avenue, South Boston Waterfront (near Harborlights/Bank of
American Pavilion). A donation of $5-$10 is requested, and you’ll be treated
to free Harpoon beer and treats from the Blue Frog Bakery in Jamaica Plain.

MassBike and WalkBoston Local Policy Victory

Dedicated readers of MassBike E-Updates will remember that back in July,
MassBike—along with WalkBoston, the Charles River Conservancy, and the
Charles River Watershed Association—organized a walk to inspect the site of
three proposed bicycle/pedestrian bridges that are needed to complete the
pathway network of the new Charles River Basin. It appeared at the time that
two of these bridges might fall prey to current Big Dig funding priorities.
We are pleased to report that Big Dig officials responded to our concerns
and have now pledged that all three bridges will be built. Thank you to Big
Dig leaders and to WalkBoston, which has worked so hard on this effort.

Special MassBike Event—Media Training for Bicycle Advocates: Saturday, Oct.

If you’re interested in the nitty-gritty of bicycle advocacy, please join
MassBike for our Media Training for Bicycle Advocates workshop. This free,
all-day workshop takes place on Saturday, October 8 and will cover skills
such as interview techniques, getting press for your events, and more.

Important Upcoming Meetings: Legislative Caucus and Longfellow Bridge

The legislature’s Rails-Trails, Bicycle, and Pedestrian Caucus meeting will
take place on Tuesday, September 20th, from 10:30 am – noon in Room 350 of
the State House. This meeting, open to all, will feature an update on
legislative, regulatory, and funding issues. Participating groups will also
have an opportunity to share their news. If you have questions, please call

Interested in the reconstruction of the Longfellow Bridge? Come to a public
information meeting on Thursday, Sept. 22 to hear about reconstruction plans
and share your thoughts. The meeting takes place at 7:00 pm at Shriners
Hospital for Children, Shriners Burn Hospital, 51 Blossom St., Boston.

MassBike’s Final Bicycling Skills Classes of 2005: Natick and Arlington

Want to improve your cycling skills before the winter? Now’s the time!
Register now for our two final bicycling skills courses of the year, in
Natick on Tuesday, Oct. 11 and Saturday, Oct. 15; and in Arlington on
Friday, Oct. 14 and Saturday, Oct. 15. The weekday sessions are free and
open to all; just make sure to RSVP. The Saturday classes cost $40 for
MassBike members and $50 for others (some additional discounts may apply).
Good news if you’re a Natick resident, however! Thanks to the sponsorship of
the Natick Police Department, the Oct. 15 Natick class is free for city
residents.

Upcoming Event: Muddy River Environmental Film Series (MassBike Speaking!)

The Coolidge Corner Theatre and the Brookline GreenSpace Alliance are
hosting the Muddy River Environmental Film Series from September 22-29. On
Sunday, September 25 at 7:00 p.m., the bicycling film “Bike Like U Mean It”
will be screened at the Coolidge Corner Theatre, followed by a discussion
led by MassBike Board Member Doug Mink and representatives of other groups
such as Bikes Not Bombs.
