So um is there a ride the 25th or not?...I joined this list 6 months ago and
there hasn't been one mention of a ride yet.

OK, OK....We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming...
Just couldn't let that one slide by without a challenge. And yes, this is
America...so the Majority of people in those communities, if given a choice,
were in favor of those projects for the jobs / local taxes reasons...and you
don't put a refinery in Park Place as the damage to the tax / job structure
would be way worse...not anybody's color.
And I would fight to the death for your right to disagree....I'm done...just
enjoyed a little debate.

Two things regarding this topic: First, it was my understanding that one of
the main tenets of Critical Mass was that it didn't have a purpose or any
discernable leaders. The idea is that it just "happens." While I don't
oppose the cause, I think putting it under the heading of Critical Mass may
be against the original purposes of CM. Perhaps you could organize a
separate ride on the day it actually hit.
Second, to Derek, are you serious with this comment? You do realize that
hundreds of thousands of people lost their homes and many their lives. The
coincidence that it's also your birthday isn't a particular reason to feel
sad, and were I personally affected by Katrina (any more than anyone else
who didn't know wnyone there) I would probably be offended by your
statement.
Not really wishing to get into an argument here, but I think these points
are important.

I will definatly ride for this. Katrina was very personal to me because it
actually touched down on the 29th, which was my birthday

Hi there! I'm a critical mass rider who is working with other cyclists and
the climate change action group Rising Tide to organize a continent-wide
Katrina anniversary critical mass ride for the last Friday in August (the
25th). This was the day Hurricane Katrina reached hurricane strength.
The idea is to remind people of the still ongoing crisis in the Gulf and the
potential for further catastrophic events from fossil fuel inspired climate
change.
We're looking for contacts with critical mass groups who want to collaborate
on this, which would basically mean committing to organizing a ride marking
the day and hopefully:
1. Organizing a sign making making party for the ride ("More Cars = More
Climate Change = More Katrinas", "Critical Mass for Climate Justice",
"Katrina was Environmental Racism", etc.).
2. Advertising the event to make it a big critical mass (we're developing
designs for flyers, handbills, etc.)
3. Collecting funds at the Critical Mass ride to send to activist and relief
groups in New Orleans.
4. Print out education stuff to hand out to people on the street witnessing
the Mass (we've got some of this in the works too.)
5. Spreading the word to Critical Mass riders in other cities.
PLEASE Let me know if you might be interested and I can send you materials.
