I say "hello" to only those folks who seem to be clearly looking for a
"hello". And I'll say "hello" to anyone, regardless of what kind of
transportation they happen to be using at the time (why would I only be
friendly to cyclists?). If I said "hello" to everyone I passed on my
trip, I'd be spending way more time greeting people and not much time
driving my bike! I mean, friendliness is great, but it's kind of
overwhelming in a busy city like Boston, Cambridge, or Somerville...

----------------------------------
A human being is a part of the whole, called by us 'universe,' a part
limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and
feelings, as something separate from the rest -- a kind of optical
delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for
us, restricting us to our personal decisions and to affection fo a few
persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this
prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living
creatures and the whole nature in its beauty."
