MassBike New Year’s Update: January 2006

Call the State House Today: Support the Major Taylor Statue

A conference committee of the state legislature will be debating a proposal
today to allocate funds for a statue honoring Major Taylor, the
groundbreaking 1899 world cycling champion and Massachusetts resident. This
will be Worcester’s first public monument to an African-American, and is
currently included in the House version of the 2006 supplemental budget, but
not the Senate version. This $205,000 allocation would essentially complete
fundraising for the statue so the selected sculptor can start work.

Currently the fate of this item is in the hands of the six legislators
listed below. Please contact them today to express your support for the
MAJOR TAYLOR MEMORIAL in H4443, Line 7004-0097, and, very important, if you
live or work in their district, let them know!
