Re – 2010 Bicycle Relay-Race
at Harvard?
Dr. Faust:
The purpose of this email is to seek your
office’s help with bringing a large college bicycle relay-race to the Harvard campus next year. My name is Jess Phillips, Jr.
I am a retired NFL football player and head of the Relay-Race 100
organizing committee. We are an eclectic assortment of bicyclist from around
the country. As you can see below, we had originally planned to have this
event in Bermuda. However, after
conferring with prospective sponsors and the fact that each of these college
students would have to get visas and passports to travel to Bermuda, we have
decided to have this collegiate relay-race in a more
easily accessible U.S.
city.
The plan is to have each major U.S. and
Canadian college/university submit a coed, four person bicycle relay team.
Each of the four team members – two males & two females -- will race 25
miles. The top three fastest teams will receive trophies and prizes. The
ideal dates being Tuesday, June 29th
to Sunday, July 4th, 2010.
This would be a great fund raising
opportunity for the university. And it will attract hundreds of prospective
future students to your campus. We expect this relay-race will attract 24,000
plus people per day. That includes race participants, their families,
friends, spectators and press from all over the country. Each of these 24,000
daily visitors will spend, on average, $17.00 per day while at this event. Keep in mind this will be a six day event.
$17.00 x 24,000 = $408,000,000 in gross daily sales.
Over the course of six days, we’re talking
about gross sales just from parking, food, and memorabilia of over $2.4
million and that doesn’t include the hundreds of thousands
of dollars that will be spent on area hotel/motel rooms, renal cars and
restaurants. We would like for the net proceeds from the concession and
parking fees to go to Harvard in exchange for hosting and helping us
organize this event.
Dr. Faust, would Harvard be interested in
helping us bring this unique sporting event to Massachusetts this coming July? We
plan to consider other locations, but I think the Harvard campus would be an
ideal place to host this first-ever event.
If interested, I would appreciate an opportunity to discuss with you in more
detail our plans for this relay-race and to find out what if any local/state
licenses and/or permits that we would need. We think this will be a great
spectator sporting event that will be televised nationally, and we hope to
make this an annual event. Thank you for your time. Your questions, comments,
suggestions are encouraged.
Sincerely,
Jess

Re - 2010 Bicycle
Relay-Race?
Mr. Curtis, my name is Jess
Phillips, Jr. I am the chairman of the Relay-Race 100 organizing
committee. The purpose of this email is to seek your help with hosting a
100 mile, coed bicycle relay-race in Hamilton Bermuda during Spring Break
in March 2010. This will be a six day event: Monday to Saturday.
Regarding the 100 mile bicycle relay-race: Each team will consist of two
males and two females from colleges and universities all over the U.S. and Canada. Race team members
will travel 25 miles before passing the baton to their teammate. Because this
race will be televised, we would like to have a race route along the beach
front.
The big attraction for the collegiate race teams will be the cash prizes and
the new car that each of the four winning team members will
receive. We are extremely confident that will be able to find
several corporate sponsors for this unique event that we would like to have
every year.
Mr. Curtis, this race, which will be televised, will bring thousands of
people to Bermuda this coming March and
generate hundreds of thousands of dollars in sales from hotel rooms to rental
cars. Who would we need to contact to discuss the possibly of having this
Spring Break 2010 Relay-Race in Bermuda?
Your help in this matter is much appreciated.
Sincerely,
Jess Phillips, Jr
